The Quill & Page Victorian Mysteries

Quill & Page Book 1 cover

“An absolute gem” – Cozy Crime Reads

Victorian mystery fiction as you’ve never read it before – from well below stairs.

Kate Quill, disgraced lady’s maid, now scrapes a living as a seamstress. Frederick Page, until recently a gentleman’s valet – don’t ask, for he won’t tell – spends his days playing chess while his savings steadily disappear. They could hardly be more different. Kate is entirely capable though plagued by self-doubt. Frederick has confidence in abundance, but is stiffer than the average corpse.

When circumstances thrust them into the role of amateur detectives on the gaslit streets of Victorian London, they find themselves pitted against society’s rarefied elite.

Along the way, they are occasionally assisted – and frequently hindered – by a colourful cast of siblings, street urchins, and Kate’s indomitable Irish landlady, Mrs McGinty. Tempers will fray. Sparks will fly. Mysteries will hopefully get solved.

Welcome to the Quill & Page Victorian Mysteries, kicking off with The Belgravia Phantom.

Book I: The Belgravia Phantom

How do you prove you didn’t scare Lady Pemberton to death with a phantom?

Such is Kate Quill’s quandary. The faked séance went horribly wrong, and now Inspector Hartwell of Scotland Yard has her in his sights.

Kate’s poor. Seamstress poor. But what she lacks in the pocket, she makes up for in allies.

There are her siblings. Daisy, the actress. Ned and Vi… There’s no way around this – they’re petty thieves.

There’s Mrs McGinty, their formidable Irish landlady. There are Vi’s Whitechapel Worthies, Little Till (adorable) and the Twins (quite odd).

And there is Frederick Page, former gentleman’s gentleman, chess aficionado, lover of puzzles, and now reluctant partner in an unlikely Victorian detective duo. Please, do not refer to him as Freddie, or he’ll be grasping for the smelling salts.

Can this glorious rabble somehow band together to investigate all those lofty lords and ladies who attended the séance?

And discover who really murdered Lady Dorothea Pemberton?

The Samuel Pepys Mysteries

Having read Samuel Pepys’s famous diaries, I found him such a fascinating, appealing (and very occasionally appalling) character that I gave him his own mystery series!

The Pepys Mysteries bring 17th century England to life, in the company of Pepys and his fictional personal inquisitors, Abby Harcourt and Jacob Standish.

Unfamiliar with the period? Think Guy Fawkes, Charles I & II, the English Civil Wars, Cromwell, the Great Plague, The Great Fire of London… The country teemed with life – and death (fortunately).

Each Pepys Mystery inhabits a fresh setting: rural witchcraft (Book 1), the naval dockyards (2), coffee houses (3), the royal court (4) Thames frost fairs (5), Restoration theatre (6), 17th century ghosts (7), the Tower of London (8) – and Book 9 just about wraps it all up! So dive into all that vibrant history, wrapped inside a series of fiendishly plotted whodunits. Enjoy.

The Pepys Mysteries are available in eBook, paperback and Kindle Unlimited. Books 1-4 are out in audiobook, read by Audible Approved narrator Charles Johnston.

About the Author

Ellis Blackwood

I’ve always loved a mystery. Growing up in England I read every Hardy Boys and Three Investigators book I could find. Later came Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh – I reread Tied Up in Tinsel every Christmas for so many years, I knew whodunit before I’d opened the book. Colin Dexter’s Inspector Morse. And Columbo. I really love Columbo.

I’m a writer by trade. So at some point the question became inevitable: why don’t I write one myself?

The Quill & Page Victorian Mysteries came first as an idea. Invert the usual upper classes investigating dreadful oiks trope.  Kate Quill and Frederick Page are distinctly below-stairs, solving crimes their social betters would rather keep quiet, on the gaslit streets of 1880s London. They arrived more or less fully formed. The gloriously chaotic found family around them followed shortly after.

But before Kate and Frederick, there was Samuel Pepys.

Read Pepys’s diaries and you enter actual 17th century London. You’re there among the grandeur and the grime, seeing and smelling what Pepys experienced. Hooked, I fell down a rabbit hole of plague years, Great Fires, Civil Wars and Restoration intrigue, and eventually emerged with nine Samuel Pepys Mysteries and a burning desire to write about the Victorians.

Two series. Ten books and counting. More than one million KU pages reads.
